Why does my 8GB memory stick show as 4GB?

Not all Sony Ericsson phones support memory sticks larger than 4GB in "Media transfer" mode. Recent models where the icon layout on the application screen can be changed (such as the C902) do support large (> 4GB) memory sticks, however.
